THE FRUIT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (PART II)

LESSON IX  –  THE FRUIT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT  (Part II)

D.     PATIENCE  OR  LONGSUFFERING

  1. LONGSUFFERING means long, enduring temper, forbearance or fortitude.  This is a sign of maturity.  Young people always want everything N-O-W!

  1. PATIENCE IN LOVE

In our relationships with other people, patience bears long with the frailties, offences, injuries and provocation of others, without murmuring or resentment or outbursts of temper.  It is only love and humility coming from God that can enable us to understand, accept and bear with the weaknesses of others.  God is patient with us also.

  1. PATIENCE IN TRIALS

Faith in the love, wisdom, power and faithfulness of God brings this enduring patience in the midst of trials in our life. (James 1:2-4) God has a good purpose and timing for everything that happens in our life.

E. KINDNESS / GENTLENESS

1. Kindness  -  love for others that expresses itself in gracious giving of favor, good deeds, mercy, pity.  (Ps. 117:2, 119:76, Isa. 54:8, Joel 2:13)

2. Gentleness  -  a disposition to be gentle, not coarse, angry or rude, soft-spoken, even-tempered in character and conduct , e.g.  picture of mother’s gentleness for baby.   (1 Thess. 2:7, 10-11)   2 Tim. 2:24  “And the servant of the Lord must not strive, but be gentle (mild) unto all men …  Let your gentleness be manifest without which no one will see the Lord.”

F. GOODNESS

1. Goodness  -  the state of being good, kind, virtuous, benevolent, generous and God-like in life and conduct.

2. Overcome all evil with good, not vengeance, not eye for an eye. (Rom. 12:20-21)

G. FAITH  (FAITHFULNESS)

1. Faith    -   an inward & wholehearted confidence, assurance, trust and reliance in God and all that He says, despite all odds and negative circumstances.

2. Faithfulness  -  stability, firmness and loyalty to God and His calling for our lives, despite all odds.

H. MEEKNESS

1. Meekness  -  the disposition to be humble, lowly, gentle and patient in suffering injuries without feeling a spirit of revenge; forbearing, yielded, tame, willing to accept, obey and submit to all the dealings of God in his life, including trials.

2. Meekness is not weakness, but power under control.  Illustration:  wild stallion (strong,

but wild, does not want to be controlled, wants to go its own way. Later, after being tamed, although retaining strength, it becomes yielded and obedient to its master.)

I. TEMPERANCE OR  SELF-CONTROL

1. Temperance is bringing the desires of self to subjection to God against the desires of the flesh, against unhealthy, excessive, destructive desires and passions of self.  e.g. lust, food, anger, etc.

2. How do we develop temperance?  By constantly disciplining our appetites, emotions and desires.  Prayer and fasting are sure ways of subjecting the body to discipline.

CONCLUDING CHALLENGE:

According to 2 Cor. 3:18, the Holy Spirit will transform us into the image of Jesus.  As we surrender our lives (spirit, soul and body) to the Holy Spirit, He develops these fruit in our lives, making us like Jesus more and more, giving glory to His Name.  By the grace of the Holy Spirit, may we manifest His FRUIT in our lives, for the glory of His Name.  Praise the Lord!!!
